The role of choline in infant brain development

There is an association between prenatal and early postnatal choline intake, brain development and neurocognitive function of children. Low maternal choline intake is associated with a higher risk of neural tube defects. The results of the study should be used to guide choline intake recommendations during pregnancy and lactation, especially because most young women are not achieving the reference intake of choline.
